Fire Prevention Week is October 6-12. Every year, the National Fire Protection Association sponsors Fire Prevention Week with a new campaign to educate the public on actions they can take to stay safe from fires. This year’s campaign is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”
Plan Your Escape at Work and at Home
During a home fire, you may have only one to two minutes to safely escape after the smoke alarm goes off. If you practice your escape plan before a fire occurs, it will help you to make the most of the time you have, and you’ll be more likely to escape safely.
During Fire Prevention Week, take the time to meet at work or at home to develop a fire escape plan. Making an escape plan for your home or workplace is easy. Here are the steps you should take:
Map it Out.
Draw a map of your home or workplace. Find two exits from every room, such as a door and a window, and draw a path from each exit to outside.
Pick a Meeting Place.
Choose a meeting place in front of your home or building for everyone to gather during a fire.
Mark Locations of Smoke Alarms, Pull Stations, & Fire Extinguishers.
In your home, make sure that you have smoke alarms in every level of your home and at least one smoke alarm in each bedroom, and near all sleeping areas.
At work, make sure you mark all locations of fire extinguishers and pull stations and teach employees what to do when a fire occurs.
Practice Your Plan.
Have a fire drill at home and at work so everyone can practice what to do when a fire occurs. If you have little kids at home, make sure they know how to call 911 during an emergency.
Does Your Workplace Have the Fire Extinguishers it Needs?
Fire extinguishers are an important component of keeping people safe at work. A fire extinguisher can prevent a fire from growing uncontrollably, causing injuries and property damage. During Fire Prevention Week, take the time to make sure you have the fire extinguishers you need and get them inspected. Also, make sure that your employees are properly trained on how to use a fire extinguisher.
At Safety Supplies Unlimited, we sell portable fire extinguishers for businesses and construction sites to keep your workplace safe. We can provide you with extinguishers, stands, and accessories so you can have the peace of mind that you have the tools you need if a fire occurs.
